(24 cards)
primary producers
organisms that produce glucose via photosynthesis.
What is chemosynthesis?
process where bacteria produce glucose from chemicals.
biotic factors->
living components of an ecosystem, like organisms.
abiotic factors->
non-living components e.g. temperature + rainfall.
What is gross primary production?
total chemical energy produced by primary producers.
What is net primary production?
Energy remaining after plants use some for respiration.
Primary consumers
organisms that feed on primary producers.
Secondary consumers.
organisms that feed on primary consumers.
Tertiary consumers.
organisms that feed on secondary consumers.
Biomass
Mass of living material in an organism.
Respiratory substrate.
Molecule used in respiration for energy release.
Starch.
Complex carbohydrate for short-term energy storage.
Cellulose.
Structural component of plant cell walls.
Lipids.
Long-term energy storage molecules in plants.
Dry mass.
Mass of an organism after removing water
Carbon mass.
Mass of carbon in an organism, typically 50% dry mass.
Calorimetry.
Method to estimate chemical energy in biomass.
Ecosystem.
Community of living organisms and their environment.
Energy transfer.
Movement of energy through tropic levels.
Producers.
Photosynthetic organisms that manufacture organic substances.
How do you work out Net Primary Production (NPP)?
Gross Primary Production - Respiration.
How do decomposers break down dead plant and animal material?
-they secrete digestive enzymes onto the surface of the dead organism
-these enzymes break down the dead matter into small soluble food molecules
-these molecules are then absorbed by the decomposers
Productivity
Rate of energy production over time.
