Verbal irony
absurd or mocking opposition to what is expected or appropriate.
Verbal irony is a literary device where the intended meaning of a statement differs from the literal meaning.

Where an event occurs which is unexpected, and which is in opposition to what is expected.

Imagery
Language which describes something in detail, using words to substitute for and create meaning.
Imagery in literature refers to the use of descriptive language to create mental images for the reader.
Iambic pentameter
Poetry written with each line containing ten syllables, in five repetitions of a two-syllable pattern wherein the pronunciation emphasis is on the second syllable.
Iambic pentameter is a common poetic meter used in English poetry, particularly by Shakespeare.
Hyperbole
A description which exaggerates.
Hyperbole is a literary device that involves extreme exaggeration to emphasize a point or create a humorous effect.
Foreshadowing
Where future events in a story, or perhaps the outcome, are suggested by the author before they happen.
Foreshadowing is a literary technique used to give hints or clues about what will happen later in the story.
Figurative language
Any use of language where the literal meaning of the words themselves is not the intended meaning.
Figurative language includes metaphor, simile, personification, and other literary devices that create imagery and evoke emotions.
