1
Q
What types of vaccines are there?
A
- Dead pathogens
- Live attenuated (weakened pathogens)
- Toxoids (toxins made harmless)
- DNA of pathogen
- Edible vaccines
2
Q
How does the immune system respond to a vaccine?
A
- Quickly kills and eliminates the pathogen that is introduces to the body
- Elicits a primary immune response that results in production of memory cells
3
Q
What is herd immunity?
A
- If enough members of a community are vaccinated, they will produce lots of memory cells
- If they contract the pathogen, they destroy it before numbers of pathogens in the body increase to levels that mean they may pass it on to others
4
Q
How does herd immunity protect the vulnerable?
A
Limits the likelihood they will have exposure to the pathogen
