Plant Tissues
Dermal tissue
Ground tissue
Vascular tissue
Meristematic tissue
Dermal tissue/epidermis
forms the outermost covering of the plant’s organs
protects inner tissues from damage and controls the exchange of water and gases
consists of epidermal cells including guard cells
Ground tissue
Parenchyma cells
Collenchyma cells
Sclerenchyma cells
Vascular tissue
provides physical support for the plant’s body and moves substances through the plant
Also transports water, minerals and sugars throughout the plant
Consists of:
xylem cells: transports water and minerals from the roots to the leaves.
phloem cells: transports nutrients such as sugars to areas where they are needed for growth and metabolism, or to the roots for storage.
Meristematic tissue
responsible for plant growth
Made of meristematic cells which are undifferentiated cells that can become any type of cell
The growth of plant tissues
Rapidly dividing meristematic cells at the tips of roots and branches cause the upward, downward and outward growth of plants
A bud is a swelling of the stem that contains the meristem for new tissues
Most active growth occurs near the terminal bud (top of the plant or ends of the roots)
The lateral buds are dormant but can give rise to new branches, leaves and flowers.
