05 - Equations Flashcards
(9 cards)
How do you solve an algebraic expression?
x + 3 = 5
You must add, subtract, multiply or divide numerals from the expression to the solution. Remeber to add, subtract, multiply or divide using the opposite of order of operations.
1. x = 5 - 3
2. x = 2
How do you solve an equation when there is more than one pronumerals on one side?
5x + 2 = 3x- 5
You must first add or subtract the pronumeral from the solution to the pronumeral in the expression. You must then solve the algebraic expression as normal
1. 5x - 3x + 2 = -5
2. 2x = -5 - 2
3. x = -7 / 2
4. x = -3 1/2
What is the Null Factor Law?
The Null Factor Law is a rule that states that if the product of two numbers is either, then either or both of the two numbers is zero.
How do you use the Null factor law?
It is a law you use for expressions that are equal to zero, and they are used only in quadratic equations. You must find out the potential values of the pronumerals, as one or both pronumerals will be equal to zero.
What does this symbol mean
>
Greater than
What does this symbol mean
<
Less than
What does it mean if the dot is coloured in on a number line?
The pronumeral is either more than or less than and equal to the point of the number line
How do you subsitute an expression?
You must implement the discovered pronumeral into the expression, and determine whether the LHS = RHS
