(15 cards)
Sole purpose of chemical combination?
To attain stability by acquiring noble gas configuration ( octet or duplet )
What is an ionic bond?
The type of chemical bond formed by the transfer of electrons from a metal to a non metal.
Charges on metallic and non metallic atoms?
metallic atoms loose electrons and form cations and non metallic atoms gain electrons and form anions.
Why are anions and cations held together?
Because of electrostatic force of attraction
What is lattice enthalpy?
It is the energy released when one mole of an ionic compound is formed from the required no. of anions and cations
Factors which affect the formation of an ionic bond?
- Low ionisation enthalpy (metallic character)
- High electron gain enthalpy (non metallic character)
- High lattice enthalpy.
Relation between lattice enthalpy and strength of a bond?
Stronger the force of attraction between the ions stronger the bond and higher lattice enthalpy.
lattice enthalpy directly proportional tp strength of a bond.
Characteristics of Ionic compounds?
- Generally solids.
- Non conductors of electricity in the solid state.
- Ionic compounds are good conductors in aqueous solution and molten form.
- Ionic compounds are soluble in polar solvents.
- Ionic reactions are very fast.
What is a covalent bond?
A covalent bond is formed by sharing of electrons b/w atoms of same of different non metals.
Why are ionic compounds generally solids?
Due to strong electrostatic force of attraction, high amount of heat is required to separate ions.
Why are ionic compounds non conductors of electricity in the solid state?
In the solid state due to strong electrostatic force of attraction ions are unable to move and unable to act as carriers of electricity.
Why are ionic compounds good conductors of electricity in aqueous solution and molten form?
In aqueous solution and molten form ions are free to move and can act as carriers of electricity.
Examples of non polar solvents?
Benzene, CCl4
Characteristics of covalent compounds?
- Gases liquids or soft solids.
- low melting and boiling points.
- Non-conductors of electricity.
Why are covalent compounds gases, liquids or soft solids?
Due to weak Vander Waal’s force of attraction b/w the molecules.
