1-3 Epithelial Cells Flashcards
(19 cards)
What are the 4 basic tissue types?
Muscle, Nervous, Epithelial, Connective tissue.
What is the difference between internal and external environment?
Internal environment refers to the body fluids and compartments, while external environment is outside the body.
Define exocrine glands.
Glands that secrete substances outside the body or into a lumen.
Define endocrine glands.
Glands that secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream.
What are the body fluid compartments?
Intracellular fluid (ICF) and Extracellular fluid (ECF).
What is the composition of intracellular fluid?
Intracellular fluid is 2/3 of the total body water volume.
What is extracellular fluid composed of?
Extracellular fluid includes interstitial fluid and plasma.
What are the types of muscle tissue?
Skeletal, smooth, and cardiac muscle.
What are the two types of epithelial tissue?
Sheets of cells lining body surfaces and secretory epithelia.
What is the structure of epithelial tissue?
One or more layers of epithelial cells separated by a basal lamina.
What is the function of epithelial tissue?
Exchange, transport, protection, secretion.
What is the function of the cell membrane?
Physical isolation, regulation of exchange, communication, structural support.
What are the types of cell signaling?
Endocrine, synaptic, paracrine, and gap junction signaling.
What is paracellular transport?
Movement of molecules across tiny gaps between cells.
What is transcellular transport?
Movement of molecules through the cytoplasm of epithelial cells.
What is the role of tight junctions?
They limit diffusion between cells, providing a barrier.
What is the function of the basal lamina?
It is an acellular matrix layer secreted by epithelial cells.
What is the composition of the cell?
Nucleus, cytoplasm, and cell membrane.
What is the function of the cytoskeleton?
Provides structural support and facilitates cell movement.
