To ask how many items / objects there are, e.g. how many apples are there?
E hia, e.g. E hia ngā aporo?
To answer an e hia question, e.g. there are 7 apples
Remove the ‘hia’, e.g. E whitu ngā āporo. However, where there is one object answer becomes: kotahi te āporo
To ask about how many people, e.g. how many people are there?
Tokohia ngā tāngata?
To answer tokohia question, e.g. 8, 12
Only use toko when number is 2-9, e.g. tokowaru, tekau mā rua
To ask how many items/objects are required, e.g. how many books (do you want)?
Kia hia, e.g. Kia hia ngā pukapuka māu?
To answer kia hia, e.g. 24 books (for me)
Kia rua tekau mā whā ngā pukapuka māku
To ask for items, e.g. I will have 1 sausage?
Homai kia, e,g, Homai kia kotahi te tōtiti
