What are mainframe computers?
A large, powerful computer that can do a lot of complicated jobs quickly and can be used by a lot of people at the same time.
What are some examples of purposes of mainframe computers in large organizations?
complex processing tasks like:
1. statistical analysis
2. bulk data processing
What are some places that microprocessors are used in?
- Washing machines
- Televisions
- etc. (other household appliances)
What are some advantages of desktops compared to laptops?
- They have more space for components
- They often provide users with the option to upgrade these components or add additional components
Define ‘upgrade’
to make a computer better and able to do more things.
What are peripheral devices?
equipment that is connected to a computer and used with it.
What are some disadvantages of desktops?
- They require power to access.
- You need peripheral devices for full function
- They are not portable
What peripheral devices do laptops usually have?
A keyboard, a screen, a track pad and a rechargeable battery.
What are ‘desktop replacements’
They are larger laptops with a bigger, better-quality screen with higher performance levels
What are some advantages of laptops?

- Doesn’t require power to operate
What are single-board computers?
These are affordable computers used in education, embedded computing projects and physical computing projects.
What is embedded computing?
Computing hardware that is fixed into position and carries out a specialist task

interactive systems that can sense and respond to the world around them

The Raspberry Pi Zero
What makes these computers so affordable?
The unit itself costs very little and it uses a cheap MicroSD card as its storage

What is a SIM card used for?
It is used to identify the subscriber to a mobile phone network

These are mobile phones that have specialist features to provide users with functions that meet particular user needs.
What is the ‘Alto 2 talking phone’?
It is a specialist mobile phone which meets the accessibility needs of blind and partially sighted people
What are smartphones?
They are small computers with Wi-Fi and mobile phone connectivity to allow them to make phone calls and access the internet
Name some characteristics of a smartphone
- They have some features of other devices like cameras, media players and hand-held game consoles.
- Their operating system is more advanced than others.
- Applications (apps) can be downloaded.
- They have a touchscreen to input information.
Why do smartphones need to be recharged more often than others?
Since they have so many functions, these phones require a lot of power so the battery life is relatively short.
What are some features of tablets?
- They are bigger than smartphones
- They have a touchscreen
- They have a virtual keyboard
- Applications can be downloaded
- You can access Wi-Fi with it
- Some have SIM card slots so that they can be online when Wi-Fi signals are not in range?
