1.) Energy Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is an energy resource used for?
To generate electricity and other useful forms of energy.
How is electricity generated ( name the three main steps) ?
1.) Energy resource is used to rotate a turbine.
2.) The rotating turbine rotates a coil of wire in a magnetic field.
3.) The coil of wire creates an electric current.
What is an electric current and what does it do?
An energy carrier and takes the energy to your home.
What are the three main fossil fuels?
Gas, oil and coal.
How is a fossil fuel used to rotate a turbine?
They are burnt to heat a fluid which creates steam and turns the turbine.
What are the disadvantages of using fossil fuels to generate electricity?
Not renewable, inefficient and contribute to global warming.
What are the advantages of using fossil fuels to generate electricity?
Reliable and on demand electricity.
Where can geothermal energy be used to generate electricity?
In volcanic places where there is magma.
How is magma used to rotate a turbine?
It heats the rocks, which heat water pipes and rotates the turbine.
What is the disadvantage of using geothermal energy?
Can only be used when there is volcanic activity close to the surface.
What are the advantages of using geothermal energy?
Renewable and reliable.
