Family diversity
The different types of families that exist in society today
Nuclear family
A father, mother and their dependent child or children living together in the same household the mother and father may be married or cohabiting
Same-sex family
A gay or lesbian couple who live together with their dependent child or children
Extended family
Include relatives beyond the nuclear family a vertically extended family includes three generations, (grandparents, parents and children) who lived together or nearby a horizontally extended family includes aunts, uncles, and cousins who live together or nearby.
Modified extended
The idea that extended family members may live apart geographically but remain in regular contact and provide support for each other.
Beanpole family
A family with multiple generations such as great grandparents, grandparents, parents and children but with few siblings in each generation.
Loan parent family
One parent and a dependent child or children who live together.
Reconstituted family
When one or both partners have a child or children from a previous relationship living with them may also be called a blended family or a step family.
Family life course
The changes that a family goes through overtime.
One person household
A household containing only one person
Empty nest family
The parents that remain at home when their adult children leave.
Cultural diversity
The range of different cultures that exist in the UK today
Immigration
The movement of people into the country from another country
Dual worker family
A family where both parents are in paid employment also called dual earner
Domestic division of labour
How tasks within the home are divided up
Gender roles
The expected roles of men and women in the family
Commune
A group of people who live together and share possessions, wealth and property
Household
One person who lives alone or a group of people who live at the same address who share at least one meal a day or facilities such as a living room.
Kibbutz
Communities established in Israel consisting of a group of people who live community and value cooperation and equality .
