1 Intro to Production Technologies Flashcards
(24 cards)
Types of industries
Primary Industries - cultivates and exploits natural resources eg. Agriculture, mining
Secondary industries - uses output of primary industries to produce consumer goods and/or capital goods. Eg. Aerospace, automobile
Tertiary industries - constitutes as the service sector of the economy. Eg. Education, insurance
Explain different types of manufactured products.
Consumer goods - products purchased directly by consumers. Eg. Tennis racket, stationary
Capital goods - products purchased by companies to produce goods and/or services. Eg. Aircraft, computers
Apart from final products, materials, components and supplies.
Define production quantity and how it’s assessed.
The number of units produced annually of a particular product type.
Low production: 1-100 units
Medium production: 100-10 000 units
High production: 10 000-1 million units
What is product variety and how is it categorised?
Product variety = the different product types or designs produced in a plant.
Soft product variety = when there is a small difference between products.
Hard product variety = when there is a substantial different between products.
What is the correlation between production quantity and product variety?
An inverse correlation.
What is manufacturing capability and what are they?
Manufacturing capability = the technological and physical limitations of a manufacturing firm and each of its plants.
1) Technological processing capability
2) Physical production limitation
3) Production capacity
What is manufacturing processes? What are the different types?
A designed procedure which results in chemical and/or physical changes to a starting material with intentions to increase the value of the material.
- processing operations
- assembly operations
What is processing operations? What are the different types?
Processing operations = transforms a work material from one state of completion to a more advanced state of completion through adding value by changing the geometry, properties or appearance of the starting material.
- shaping operations
- property-enhancing processes
- surface processing operations
What is shaping operations? What are the different types?
Shaping operations = alters the geometry of starting materials
- solidification
- particulate processing
- deformation processes
- material removal processes
Describe solidification.
Starting material is a heated liquid or semigloss that cools and solidifies to form part of the geometry.
What is the process of particulate processing?
Starting material is a powder, the powder are formed and heated into the desired geometry.
What is manufacturing?
Technologically, manufacturing = application of physical and chemical processes to alter the geometry, properties and/or appearances of a starting material to produce parts or products. Manufacturing also includes the assembly of the parts.
Economically, manufacturing = transformation of materials to items or greater value through one or more processing and/or assembly operations.
Describe particulate processing.
Starting material is a powder, the powders are formed and heated into the desired geometry.
Describe deformation processes.
Starting material is a ductile solid (commonly metal) that is deformed to shape a part.
Describe material removal processes.
Starting material is a solid (ductile/brittle), from which material is removed to result in the desired geometry.
What is property-enhancing processes? What is a type and describe it.
Property-enhancing processes = process performed to improve mechanical/physical properties of material
- Heat treatment
Annealing and strengthening process for glass and metal
What are the different kinds of surface processing? Describe them.
- cleaning
Chemical and physical processes to remove dirt, oil & other contaminants from the surface. - surface treatments
Includes mechanical work (eg. Shot peening, sand blasting) and physical processes (eg. Diffusion, ion implantation) - coating & this film deposition processes
Apply a coating of material to the exterior surface of the work part (eg. Electroplating, anodising)
What is assembly operations? What are the different types?
Assembly operations = joins two or more components to create a new entity, called an assembly, subassembly, or some other term that refers to the joining process.
- permanent joining
- mechanical fastening
What is a permanent joining process? What are the different types?
Permanent joining processes = forms a joint between components that cannot be easily disconnected
- welding
- brazing and soldering
- adhesive bonding
Describe the different kinds of mechanical fastening.
- threaded fasteners
Mechanical assembly method where joint can be conveniently disassembled - permanent fastening method
Eg. Rivets, press fitting, expansion fits
What is production systems? What are the different kinds?
Production systems = consists of people, equipment and procedures designed for the combination of materials and processes that constitute a firms manufacturing operations
- production facilities
- manufacturing support system
What is production facilities?
Refer to the physical equipment and arrangement of equipment in the factory.
What is manufacturing support system?
Procedures used by the company to manage production and solve technical and logistic problems encountered in ordering materials, moving work through factory, and ensuring that products meet quality.
What are machine tools?
Machine tools = power driven machines used to operate cutting tools previously operated by hand
Eg. presses, forging machine, rolling mills, welding machine
