1. Nouns of the 2nd declension Flashcards
(16 cards)
- Cases are in the order used by some modern textbooks: nom. acc. gen. dat. voc. We begin with the 2nd declension, because it’s the least complicated.
Decline ἄνθρωπος (“human”) in the singular.
Remember fundamental rule of Greek accent: for a word to be proparoxytone (i.e. it has an acute accent on the antepenult) the ultima must be short.
ἄνρθωπος
ἄνθωρπον
ἀνθρώπου
ἀνθρώπῳ
ἄνθρωπε
2.
Decline ἄνθρωπος in the plural.
Remember that final -οι (not -οις) is considered short. Note: vocatives are not reviewed in the plural of any noun because in the plural they are always identical with the nominative.
ἄνθρωποι
ἀνθρώπους
ἀνθρώπων
ἀνθρώποις
- Decline λέμβος (“dinghy, skiff, small boat”) in the singular.
- λέμβος, λέμβον, λέμβου, λέμβῳ, λέμβε

- Decline δῆμος in the plural.
- δῆμοι, δήμους, δήμων, δήμοις
- Decline ῥαψῳδός (“rhapsode”) in the singular.
Remember the Genitive / Dative Rule: a 1st or 2nd declension noun that is oxytone (it has an acute accent on the ultima) changes to perispomenon (it has a circumflex on the ultima) in the genitive and dative.
- ῥαψῳδός, ῥαψῳδόν, ῥαψῳδοῦ, ῥαψῳδῷ, ῥαψῳδέ

Note: vocatives are not reviewed in the neuter because they are always the same as the nominative and the accusative forms.
