Hannah is very patient and gives praise to God. This mirrors David who is on the run for 10
years and does everything for the Lord.

Eli’s family is gluttonous and disobeys what God tells them. This mirrors Saul who disobeys
God because he cares about what people think.
How do Eli’s sons die?
They are killed in battle by the Philistines.
How does Eli die?
He was a big man and fell after hearing the news about his sons and the ark.
Where do the Philistines place the Ark of the covenant after they take it from the Israelites?
In the temple of one of their gods Dagon.
What plagues does God place upon the Philistines for stealing the Ark?
Tumors.

The difference between Eli and Samuel’s leadership is that Samuel consults God about his
decisions and does not deliberately disobey the Lord.
What does Israel demand from Samuel in chapter 8? Why do they want this?
They demand a king to be like the other nations.
What type of rights will the King have over the people of Israel? What will he be able to “take” from them?
He will appoint himself commander of thousands and take their women as bakers. They will become slaves to him.
Based on class discussion, why does God give us things we ask for even when He knows it is not best for us?
So we can learn a lesson. When we are stubborn the only way to learn is to get exactly what we want.

He hides among the baggage, does not tell his uncle about becoming king, and does not
respond to the people who doubt his kingship.
What drives Saul to disobey the Lord’s command and offer the sacrifice in chapter 13?
He is worried about what people think and that drives his actions.

God is disappointed because he gave us the opportunity to succeed.

Saul starts to lose favor with God and enlists the help of David to rid him of a bad spirit. (16:14) Then he becomes afraid of David because the Lord was with David but not him. (18:12) Lastly, Saul becomes so jealous that he plots to kill David (19:2)
Explain David’s rise throughout the book of 1 Samuel. Give at least 3 text references explaining the process.
David starts as a shepherd who is enlisted to play the lyre to rid Saul of an evil spirit. (16:16)
Then he becomes friends with Jonathen making a covenant with him even though he was not
destined to rule as he should. (18:1) Lastly, David has the opportunity to kill Saul but does not because it was not the Lord’s desire for him to do so. (26:11)
