1: Scientific Endeavour Flashcards
(18 cards)
Scientific knowledge is…
Constructed based on evidence
Scientific evidence is subject to…
Multiple interpretations
Parts of the Bunsen Burner:
Barrel, collar, air hole, jet, base
Luminous Flame
Air hole: Closed
Non-luminous flame
Air hole: (Partially) Open
Luminous flame:
With too little air, the gas mixture will not burn completely and will form tiny
carbon particles that are heated to glowing, making the flame luminous.
Non-luminous flame:
Correctly adjusted Bunsen burner has a blue flame with
a light blue inner cone.
Strike back
- occurs sometime when air holes are opened too widely
- the flame may burn inside the burner tube (strike back)
- flame changes to a green colour and produces a loud noise
- barrel could be extremely hot
- turn off gas immediately
Independent Variable
Is the variable we want to change
Dependent Variable
Is the variable measured in the experiment when the independent variable is changed
Controlled Variable/s
Must be kept constant
Accuracy
How close to he accepted value
Precision
How close the results are to each other
Systematic error
Errors that are consistent (e.g zero error)
Random error
Errors that are unpredictable (e.g human reaction error)
Zero error
The condition where the measuring
instrument registers a reading when there should not be any reading
Parallax Error
Error in reading an instrument as a
result of not viewing the measurement scale from the correct position
