What is the bible
Books of christainities sacred texts (new+old=canon of the bible), express belief about god, his purpose for humanity and rest of created world
Extent to which bible has authority is the extent to which is has the right to demand obedience/belief
Old Testament has teaching from Tenakh, most writings are prose and poetry, contains Torah (law), historical writings, prophetic bowls and wisdom books
New Testament contains gospel, Acton’s of apostles, epistles adn book of revelation
Nature and authority - evangelical Protestants (conservative)
Hold a fundamentalist view of nature and authority of the bible, Christian’s are saved by grace (gods free gift) through faith in jesus atonement
Doctrine of atonement (part of St Paul’s theology) held that after Adam’s original sin, god and world became reconciled after sacrifice of Jesus
Spread the word of Jesus, those who converted are saved from sin, receive in savation by being ‘born agan’
BELIEVE- bible is inaffble/ inerrant word of god
Authors directly inspired by god (‘all scripture is god breathed and is useful for teaching rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness’)
Apparent contradictions in content are die to limitations of human intellect (aren’t real contradictions - conflict between religion and science means religion is authoritative, dictates what science really is / ‘verbal plenary inspiration’ god inspired al of scripture
Young earth creationists - literalist approach, reject theories that contradict literal meaning of genesis 1
Old earth creationists - genesis 1 gives scientificall correct amount of origin of univers, don’t adopt literalist apprach
