What is reception

A

the process of sensory receptors detecting a stimulus (or changes to a stimulus)

What is transduction

A

Transduction is the process where sensory receptors convert light into electrochemical energy so the brain can understand it.

(in vision, rods and cones (photoreceptors) turn light (electromagnetic energy) into signals that leave the retina and travel to the brain

What is transmission

A

The process when the nerve impulses leave the sensory receptor site and are transmitted to the primary sensory cortex to respond

(Rods and cones in the retina (sensory receptor site) send the neural impulses along the optic nerve and to the visual cortex of the brain (occipital lobe))

A

Selection is when the brain pays attention to certain parts of the information it receives and ignores the rest.

(Special cells called feature detectors help by picking out important details like shapes, lines or colours, often influenced by past experiences or context)

A

Organisation is the process where the brain puts sensory information back together to form something meaningful.

A

Interpretation is when the brain gives meaning to sensory information so we understand what it is.

(This process uses areas like the temporal lobe (to identify objects) and the parietal lobe (to judge location) and is often influenced by past experiences, motives and values)
