1. Virtue of Knowledge Flashcards
(18 cards)
What are two reasons why it is important to know the virtue of something before you do it?
- Motivation - allows you to endure the hardship for attaining it
- Sincerity - the worldly benefits become insignificant when we know the reward is from Allah
What are two reasons we were created to worship Allah, and where are these reasons stated in the Qur’aan?
- We were created to worship Allah alone - Surah Ad-Dhaariyaat Verse 56
- We were created so that we can get to know Allah - Surah At-Talaq Verse 12
These two reasons do not contradict each other, rather they complement each other, as once we get to know who Allah really is, we can worship Allah better
What is a Virtue of Knowledge mentioned in Surah Ali-Imran?
Allah mentioned (in 3:18) the testimony of the people of knowledge, along with His own testimony and that of the angels.
Allah specifically mentioned the people of knowledge along with the angels
The knowledge allows the people of knowledge to be fully certain, and this is why their testimony is worthy of being mentioned
What is a Virtue of Knowledge mentioned in Surah Mujaadilah Verse 11?
Allah mentions that ‘Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.’
Being a person of knowledge causes a person to be raised up in rank, and raises the status of a person.
The status of this person is raised by Allah and not by the people
What are the five Virtues of Knowledge mentioned in a single hadith in Abu Dawood 3641?
- Allah will make the path to Jannah easy for them
- Angels put their wings down out of pleasure when they see a seeker of knowledge
- Everything in the heavens and earth ask forgiveness for the scholar/student of knowledge
- The virtue of a scholar over a dedicated worshiper is like the full moon over the stars when the night is full
- The scholars are the inheritors of the Prophet
Do you have to become a scholar in order to have the path of Jannah made easy?
No, you just need to get on the path of seeking knowledge
What is a potential reason why the angels put their wings down when they see a seeker of knowledge?
One reason may be because this action of seeking knowledge is very virtuous
Why is the scholar better than a dedicated worshiper, even if he is worshiping Allah day and night?
This because the scholar can worship Allah properly, whereas the worshiper may not know how to properly perform certain actions.
Another reason is because the scholar benefits others whereas the worshiper may only benefit himself
What did Allah say about the people of knowledge in Surah Fatir Verse 28?
Allah mentioned that ‘Only those fear Allah, from among His servants, who have knowledge’
The word ‘إِنَّمَا’ is a word that gives you the benefit of limiting, which means only this one. So in this context, it can be said that ONLY the scholars (or those of knowledge) really fear Allah
What was the Dua Allah command to the Prophet to say in Surah Taha 114?
رَّبِّ زِدْنِي عِلْمًا
‘My Lord, increase me in knowledge’
When Allah wants good for a person, what does Allah give them?
In Riyaadh As-Saliheen 1375 it states:
‘Whoever Allah wants good for, Allah gives him understanding in religion’
Ali ibn Abi Talib gave some advice to a person regarding the virtues of seeking knowledge. Who was this advice given to?
Kumayl ibn Ziyaad
Ali ibn Abi Talib said to Kumayl ibn Ziyaad: ‘The hearts are vessels, the best of them are hold the most’. What does he mean by this statement
This means that the best hearts are those which memorise/internalise/understand the most
Ali ibn Abi Talib in his advice to Kumayl ibn Ziyaad said that ‘People are of three types’. What are the three types of people?
- A scholar who is rabbani (nurturing scholar)
- A student who is on the path to safety
- A confused rabble who follows everyone who calls out, bending along with every wind
What does it mean to be a scholar who is a rabbani?
This means to be a scholar who is nurturing.
This scholar joins between knowledge and tarbiyyah
What are the four things which knowledge can give you but wealth cannot, therefore making knowledge better than wealth?
- Knowledge is a protection for you, whereas it is you that has to protect wealth. Knowledge is a bodyguard. It guards from desires, misconceptions, confusions, etc.
- Knowledge increases through spending, whereas spending decreases wealth. The benefit of wealth goes away when it is gone.
- The good of knowledge remains, whilst the good of wealth disappears over time.
- Knowledge is a judge, and wealth is judged over
Is loving the scholar part of our religion?
Yes, Ali ibn Abi Talib told Kumayl ibn Ziyaad that ‘Loving the scholar is part of the religion we follow’
What happened to the people who collected knowledge compared to the people who collected wealth
‘The people who collected their wealth died even while they were alive, and the scholars remain as long as time remains. We might have lost them as individuals, but their examples remain in our hearts.’
