An individual who’s familiar with a place and feels welcome in the place
What is an outsider?
An individual who feels excluded/unwelcome in a place

Factors which influence how we perceive places
What does nonplace refer to?
Places which don’t go anywhere but endlessly refer to other places
What are experienced places?
Places we’ve spent time in as residents or tourists
What are media places?
Places we haven’t been to but created a sense of place through depictions in the media

Human love of place
What is topophobia?
A dread to a place as different people notice different things about a place
What is genius loci
The unique atmosphere or spirit of a place which includes its nature and characteristics
What are near places?
Geographically near and people feel like insiders as they’ve experienced them and feel comfortable in them
What are far places?
Geographically far and people feel like outsiders as they haven’t experienced them and feel uncomfortable in them
What is character of a place?
Physical and human characteristics which distinguish a place from other places
What are endogenous factors?
Internal/local factors which shape a place’s character
What are exogenous factors?
External factors which shape a place’s character
What is rebranding?
Giving a place a new identity so it’s more appealing to people
