A
missed/delayed meal 
not enough carbohydrate at last meal 
increased physical activity 
too much insulin 
alcohol (esp. on an empty stomach)
tight control (little reserves for unexpected events)

ways to reduce risk?

A

carry an emergency supply of carbohydrate and diabetic ID
check BG frequently (esp. before bed)
never consume alcohol on an empty stomach
be aware that stress/illness/exercise affects BG levels

how is it managed?

A

concern for T1DM and T2DM treated with insulin

15-20g of rapidly absorbed carbohydrate (glucose tablets or glucose/sugary drink)

how does exercise cause hyperglycaemia?

A

exercise with low insulin - low glucose absorption into muscle
low muscle glycogen
secretion to glucagon - resulting in excess glucose
