CH 28.3 note questions Flashcards
What is the climate system?
It consist of five major components: Atmosphere, Hydrosphere, Cryosphere, Lithosphere. and Biosphere, and their interactions.
What are the components interactions?
The atmosphere includes the air around us, the biosphere is everything organic, the hydrosphere is liquid water, the cryosphere is frozen water in snow or glaciers, the lithosphere is Earth’s outermost layer.
What is the difference between weather and climate?
Weather refers to short term atmospheric conditions while climate is the long term average of weather conditions.
How do winds affect climate?
Prevailing winds bring air from one type of climate to another.
How do mountains affect weather?
They act as wind barriers, blocking weather systems and alternating patterns of precipitation.
What is precipitation?
Rain, hail, and snow.
What are the three major divisors of climate classification?
Cold or boreal, arid and semi-arid, warm climates with adequate precipitation.
What climate divisor are we in?
Arid and semi-arid.
Why doesn’t the pole receive a good amount of solar radiation?
It is because of Earth’s tilted axis.
Where on the earth is solar radiation most intense?
The equator.
