Q

What is the definition of ‘purpose’?

A

Everyone will have a slightly different definition of purpose. If we live according to our purpose, things will fall into place, or we will be in the right place for us. It is this sense of “fitting” or of being in the right place
that we will explore in this Method.

Q

What is the cognitive component of purpose?

A

The cognitive component of your purpose is your self-knowledge. It is your awareness of who you really are. By learning about who you are, your core values, and what you are passionate about, you learn about your world and how you fit into it. This unique fit is your purpose.

What is the motivational component of purpose?

Once you know how you fit into the world, purpose is
intrinsically motivating. It makes you prioritise your

Q

What is purpose coherence?

A

Purpose coherence is when the cognitive and motivational components of purpose are closely aligned and support each other. You are pursuing goals that feel precious because they serve the purpose and this coherence leads to a sense of fulfilment.

Purpose is a generative source of meaning
through constant goal setting and achievement that
is aligned with our deepest selves.

Q

What is the relationship between purpose and flow?

A

One theory about how flow arises is that flow is an outcome of purpose-driven activities or harmonious passions. Such “harmonious passions” are done autonomously and feel in accord with the other domains of our life.

What is flow?

A

“Flow” is the state of engagement where we are so fully immersed in the activity that all else goes away - we become one with the activity (Csikszentmihalyi, 1990).

Q

What is the relationship between purpose and work?

A

We often conflate purpose and work. When we think of purpose, we think of identifying nouns, such as “lawyer” or “parent”. It is this type of purpose that many of us find in our jobs.

The type of Purpose we are examining in this Method is not an identifying noun but a verb that acts to pull you forward in life.
