The Vine Flashcards

1
Q

What is the primary species of wine used to make wine?

A

Q

How can a grower preserve and reproduce the unique characteristic of a certain varietal?

A

Cutting or layering; not planting seeds.

A cutting is a section of a shoot can be replanted.

Layering is when a cane is bent down so that a section is buried; it takes root and the cane linking the new plant to the old is cut; this system is more susceptible to phylloxera though.

Q

What is grafting?

A

The technique used to join a rootstock and a Vitis Vinifera variety, typically to prevent phylloxera.

Two techniques are bench grafting and head grafting.

Bench grafting is accomplished by machine, fusing the two sections together, prior to planting.

Head grafting is when the existing vine is cut back to the trunk and a new bud or cutting is grafted onto it.
