What is drift and how is it measured?
- Drift is the angular difference between the HDG steered by the pilot and the TR of the aircraft over the ground
- Measured from heading to the track
What is maximum drift ?
Experienced when wind direction is perpendicular to the aircrafts planned track
What is minimum drift?
Experienced when the wind direction is along the same/reciprocal of the aircraft heading
What is a position line?
The direct line from an aircraft to a point of interest
What is a relative bearing ?
The clockwise angle between the nose of the aircraft and the position line
What is true bearing ?
The clockwise angle between true north and the position line to the POI
What is a transit bearing ?
Determined when two objects line up as the aircraft passing them
For PC-21, how can rough distance estimation be done airborne ?
3/4 of Altitude is distance in nautical miles on wingtip
What is dead reckoning?
Dead reckoning is when the position of an aircraft is calculated by:
- the pilot using a previously known position
- applying the actual direction and speed of travel in the intervening period since that position
What are the two formulas for estimation of ground speed and time?
1) Speed (KTS) = Distance (NM) / Time (HR)
2) Time (HR) = Distance (NM) \ Speed (KTS)
How many nautical miles a minute is 240 kts?
4 nm a minute
What is Distance formula ?
Distance = speed x time
What is estimation of fuel burn formula?
Fuel burn = Fuel flow x time
What is the definition of the flight planned track (FPT)?
The planned track to be flown, as shown on the abbreviated navigation proforma
What is the definition of track?
The path the aircraft is intended to follow over the ground.
