How are esters made?
A
They are made by a condensation reaction between carboxylic acids and alcohols (esterfication). Water is also formed.

A
The ester link (COO)

How do you name an ester?
A
The alcohol’s name is first, but the ending is ‘-ly’. The acid goes next, but ends with ‘-anoate’

How do you breakdown an ester?
A
The breaking up of an ester can be achieved by heating the ester with an alkali. This is a hydrolysis reaction, as water is reacted to break up the structure.
