Q

What is csf pleocytosis?

A

Raised CSF cell count without an evident infecting organism

Usually a mixture of lymphocytes and neutrophils

Q

What are the causes of sterile CSF pleocytosis

A

Partially treated bacterial meningitis

Viral meningitis

Tb and fungal meningitis

Intracranial abscess

Neoplastic meningitis

Parameningeal foci- paranasalsinuses

Syphilis

Cerebral venous thrombosis

Cerebral malaria

Cerebral infarction

Following SAH

Encephalitis including HIV

Rarities - cerebral malaria, sarcoidosis, lyme dosease, endocarditis, cerebral vasculitis

23
Q

Malaria CSF findings

A

Increased protein
Reduced glucose
CSF pleocytosis
Generally normal

24
Q

Fungal meningitis

A

Clear CSF
<500- monocytes
>200 -protein
NL or low- sugar
