Organic vs Inorganic Compounds
Organic Compounds have covalent bonds
Inorganic Compounds usually have covalent bonds
What is a hydrocarbon?
A molecule that only contains carbon and hydrogen
What is a substituted hydrocarbon?
A hydrocarbon where one or more hydrogen atoms is replaced by another atom or group of atoms
Two types of hydrocarbons
Aliphatic and aromatic
Types of Aliphatic Hydrocarbons and what defines them
Alkanes: Only single bonds
Cycloalkanes: Alkanes with carbon atoms in rings
Alkenes: Contain at least one double bond
Alkynes: Contain at least one triple bond
Saturated vs unsaturated hydrocarbons
Saturated means that the molecule only contains carbon and hydrogen and only contain single covalent bonds
All alcohols contain what type of group?
-OH
Hydroxyl
Aldehyde/Carbonyl group
Amide/Carboxamide Group
Amine/Amino Group
Carboxylic Acid/Carboxyl Group
Ester/Ester Group
Ether/Ether Group
R - O - R
Halide/Halogen Atom Group
R - Cl(or - Br, - F, -I)
Ketone/Carbonyl Group(Ketone)
Alkene Double Bond Group
Alkyne Triple Bond Group
R - C - - - C - R
Carbon/Hydrogen Formulas for Hydrocarbons
Alkanes: CnH2n+2
Cycloalkanes: CnH2n
Alkenes: CnH2n
Alkynes: CnH2n-2, IF NO RINGS EXIST
