Etiology

A

HE is an extreme form of morning sickness
-1% of pregnancies

Linked to raised bhCG in 8-12wks, can persist up to 20wks

  • multigravid
  • trophoblastic disease
  • hyperthyroidism
  • nulliparous
  • obesity
  • non smoker

A

DIAGNOSIS OF EXCLUSION

5% prepregnancy weight loss
Dehydration
Electrolyte imbalance

N+V and

  • unable to keep liquids/antiemetics down
  • ketonuria/5% prepregnancy weight loss
  • confirmed/suspected comorbidity

PUQE - classify severity of NVP

A

1st line - Antihistamine - promethazine/cyclizine

2nd line - ondansetron/metoclopramide

IV hydration for support
