INDICATION FOR A DIABETIC CLEAR FLUID DIET
- T1DM, T2DM, GDM or insulin resistance patient receive a clear fluid diet due the following:
- Loss of fluids and electrolytes
- Preparing for bowel procedures
- Recovering from a paralytic ileus or temporary reduction in bowel residue
- Short-term use in the recovery of abdominal surgery or severe burns
CONTRA-INDICATIONS FOR A DIABETIC CLEAR FLUID DIET
- If used for more than 24 hours under any condition
- T1DM, T2DM, GDM and insulin resistance patients
- With other known vitamin and mineral deficiencies
- Gastrointestinal intolerance
- Inadequate gastrointestinal function
- Paralytic ileus
- Suspected small bowl trauma
- Perforation or obstruction of the ileus
- It is also contraindicated when diabetic patients are fed parenterally rather than enterally
DEFINE A DIABETIC CLEAR FLUID DIET
- Foods that are clear liquid.
- Restricted amounts and types of carbohydrates.
- T2DM, T1DM, GM and insulin resistant patients.
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A DIABETIC CLEAR FLUID DIET
- Provide an oral source of fluid
- Small amount of energy and electrolytes to diabetes patients who have lost fluid and electrolytes through:
- Diarrhoea
- Vomiting
- Nasogastric suction
- Fistula drainage
- Infection
- Burns
- Minimise diabetic complications
- Prevent dehydration
- Reduce colonic residue to a minimum
- Ensure optimal blood glucose control.

TO AVOID;
All grain foods including whole grains, processed grains such as pasta, rice, hot and cold cereals, bread, snacks and sweets that are flour-based (cakes, cookies)
PROTEINS ALLOWED AND TO AVOID IN A DIABETIC CLEAR FLUID DIET
ALLOWED: NONE
TO AVOID: Beef and pork (all cuts) Chicken and turkey (all cuts) Fish (all types) Nuts and nut butters (all types) Eggs (all types) Meat substitutes (all types) such as soy and tofu Cold cuts or lunch meat (all types) including salami, ham, roast beef, deli turkey, etc. Sausage (all types)
