Fisheries Flashcards

1
Q

What are the problems associated with the fishing industry?

A
  1. Pollution of rivers, lakes and the sea reduces the amount of fish in these waters. These fish stocks can take years to regenerate.
  2. Overfishing reduces and/or wipes out fish stocks at sea. Fish quotas have been assigned to ensure stocks can be replenished.
  3. The use of small-mesh nets can result in too many young/small fish being caught.

Q

Give one example (in detail) of conservation in fishing.

A

The size of the mesh in fishing nets is crucially important.
If the mesh is too small, then young, small fish are trapped as well as older, larger fish.
Removing too many young fish may reduce the ability of the fish to maintain a viable population size.
Fishing with large-mesh nets doesn’t remove the young, small fish. This allows the fish numbers
