What is the purpose of a pronoun?
To avoid repetition and make sentences easier to understand.
What are the different types of pronouns?
- Personal
- Reciprocal
- Indefinite
- Demonstrative
- Interrrogative
- Reflexive
- Intensive
What are personal pronouns?
Associated with a particular person ex: I, you, he, she, we, it
What are reciprocal pronouns?
Used to identify an action or feeling that’s reciprocal.
Only 2: Each other and one another
What are indefinite pronouns?
Don’t refer to any person, amount or thing in particular ex: anything, something, anyone
What are demonstrative pronouns?
Used to point something specific within a sentence ex: that, those, this, these
What are interrogative pronouns?
Used to ask questions ex: who, which, what, whose, whom
What is a reflexive pronoun?
Indicates that the subject and the object are both the same ex: myself, yourself, himself
(I) looked at (myself)- = person
What is an intensive pronoun?
Adds emphasis to a statement ex: I did it myself
What is modality?
When language is used to discuss possible situations.
What do modal verbs convey?
CAN: request permission
MAY: express possibility
MAY: request permission
MUST: express obligation
What are the 3 types of modality?
- Epistemic modality
- Deontic modality
- Boulomaic modality
What is epistemic modality?
Encompasses knowledge or belief ex: may, might, could
What is deontic modality?
How world must work according to certain norms ex: you may/can go now
What is boulomaic modality?
What is possible/necessary given someone’s desires ex: You have 10 minutes
