10.2 Diversity within a community Flashcards

1
Q

Q

What is species richness

A

The number of different species in a particular area at a given time.

It doesn’t take into account the number of individuals in each species however

Q

What is the equation for measuring species diversity

The higher the value of d, the more diverse the species is

A

d = N(N-1) / ∑n(n-1)

So N is total number of organisms of all species
And n is total number of organisms of each species

∑ is the sum of members of individual species

Q

what is the difference between species richness and the diversity index

A

The diversity index takes into account the numbers of individuals in each species, whilst species richness only takes into account the number of different species in the area
