-Motivate by giving praise, but limit so it doesn’t lose effect
1•When correcting a mistake, encourage at the same time
2•Prior to teaching, assess the patient to find out the patient’s needs and current understanding
3•Patient-centered- ask the patient how they learn best
4•Develop a rapport with the patient
5•Always demonstrate a skill prior to asking the patient to perform it
6•Request return demonstration to assess learning
7•Provide an environment conducive to learning
8•Try to reduce distractors, like pain, anxiety, embarrassment
9•Allow ample time for practice & asking questions
10•Show respect for patient and how this relates to patient goals

•Reducing barriers

A

1•Adjust teaching method as needed (talking, watching, doing, etc)
2•Focus on the patient’s concerns and benefit
3•Encourage patient to bring family member/caregiver
4•Break down into smaller chunks of information
5•Allow for practice
6•Use plain language and utilize repetition
7•For Autism, be prepared to adjust teaching strategy, use repetition, maintain a regular schedule, avoid touch for some
8•Find out patient’s interests and motivation
9•Visual impairments- utilize large print
•Hearing impairments- move close, speak clearly and distinctly, but don’t yell. Reduce distracting sounds, keep appropriate light levels
10•Use interpreters when needed
11•Understand patient values & beliefs
