Dx Flashcards
Poikilocytosis
increase in abnormal red blood cells of any shape that makes up to 10% or more of the total population. Poikilocytes can be flat, elongated, teardrop-shaped, crescent-shaped, sickle-shaped, or can have pointy or thorn-like projections, or may have other abnormal feature
Anisocytosis
Characteristic for ed blood cells (RBCs) that are unequal in size
Hypochromasia +1
Lack of red coloring matter on red blood cells is in minimal amount.
Usually caused by iron deficiency
Acute gastroenteritis
AKA AGE
A sudden onset of vomiting, diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps
Adenopathy
AKA lymphadenopathy
lymph nodes that have become enlarged or swollen due to an infection,
Venous Thromboembolism
VTE
condition in which a blood clot forms most often in the deep veins of the leg, groin or arm
Difference between DVT and VTE
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a disorder that includes deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. A deep vein thrombosis (DVT) occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein, usually in the lower leg, thigh, or pelvis
Thalassemia
A genetic blood disorder characterized by a abnormally low level of hemoglobin and RBCs
Sx: Fatigue, weakness, paleness, and slow growth.
Mean corpuscular volume
AKA Mean Cell Volume (MCV)
Often a number/variable listed in CBC (cell blood count). This value is often sig to diagnose different types of anemia as well as other health conditions
MCV = (HCT x 10)/[RBC]
