Q

Assumptions of the molecular kinetic theory of an ideal gas

A

the actual volume of the molecules is negligible in comparison to the empty space.
there is no net loss or gain of energy. (Collisions are perfectly elastic)
The average kinetic energy of gas particles depends only on the absolute temperature
Inter molecular attractions are absent.

Q

How to use the concept of molar volume of a gas in a sum?

A

If the volume of the gas in not given under standard states, it should be converted to the volume at standard state by using the combined gas equation. then by equating the value for the molar volume as 22.4 dm3mol-1 the no. of moles of the particular gas can be found.

Standard states- 1 atm pressure
273 K

Q

At a given temperature kinetic energies of ideal molecules are the same (true/false)

A

false

only the average kinetic energies will be equal, kinetic energies change as they have different speeds
