Confined Space Flashcards

1
Q

What is the atmosphere testing we need to entre a confined space?

A

20.9% Oxygen by volume
0 < 5% 0f LEL (5 - 10%)
0 ppm of H2S (10 - 15 ppm)
0 ppm CO (30 - 150 ppm)

the detector will read
Carbon monoxide 0 – 100ppm
Flammable gases 0-100% LEL
Hydrogen sulphide 0 – 50ppm
Oxygen 0 – 25%VOL

Q

The Procedure of entry a confined space?

A

. Identify the enclosed space to be entered
. Appoint a competent person to oversee the entry
. Identify the hazards in the enclosed space
. Assess the risk associated with the identified hazards
. Carry out the control measures to eliminate or reduce
the risk, including
. Elimination
. Substitution
. Isolation, (ie ventilation)
. Engineering
. Administrative control
. PPE
. Ensure the entry requirements are met, including
. Atmosphere testing
. Isolating equipment and tagging out
. Completion of entry permit and posted near entry
. Obtain hot work permit if needed
. Obtain work permit if needed
. Stand by person present
. Communication maintained
. All relevant personnel/authorities notified
. signposting erected
. emergency equipment available
. emergency procedures prepared and rehearsed
. Competent person to ensure that all safe enclosed
space working practices are observed during the
operation
. On completion of the work, the space is returned back
to service
. All records and reports are completed and dealt with
as required.

Q

What is H2S?

A

Hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) is a colourless gas with a characteristic odour of rotten eggs which being denser than air may pool in low areas in still conditions. Where does hydrogen sulfide come from?

Q

What is carbon monoxide

A

For example, 0.5 – 5 ppm is the typical amount that one would find outdoors in a major metropolitan area and carries little to no risk of side effects. However, if an individual spent 8 hours in a confined space where the gas level sat at 50 ppm, they could expect to have a headache and dizziness
