Explain the importance of any Christian festival

A
  • reminds us of JESUS’ LIFE (birth, resurrection, temptation, last supper, death, resurrection)
  • demonstrates that Jesus was the INCARNATION as he (born of a virgin, survived fasting in the desert, called God his father in the last supper, rose from the dead)
  • opportunity to be closer to God and become a better person allowing us to achieve SALVATION
  • deepens our understanding of God

A

EASTERN ORTHODOX CHURCH- transubstantiation occurs behind a screen
NON-CONFORMIST PROTESTANTS-(commemoration) symbolic, only a reminder of the last supper but gives spiritual nourishment
SALVATION ARMY/QUAKERS-no sacraments as Jesus is the only priest
CofE- split: some follow Catholic belief, others follow non conformist

PENITENTIAL RITE-beginning of mass laity asks for forgiveness
LITURGY OF THE WORD- readings from the bible and a homily
LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST- transubstantiation occurs bread and wine –> body and blood
RITE OF DISMISSAL- priests sends out the laity to spread the gospel to the world

  • FINAL sacrament of initiation when someone is fully welcomed into the church
  • sealed/ receive the HOLY SPIRIT (gifts God gave at baptism reach fulfilment)
  • recognised as being an ADULT MEMBER of the church (Catholic readily commits to their faith)
  • GRACE (spiritual faith) is given to live the Christian life and honour their baptismal promises.

  • on ASH WEDNESDAY catholics have an ASH CROSS put on their forehead at mass to remind them to pray, fast and give more to charity
  • Catholics try to PRAY more and strengthen their faith by helping others (visiting the sick and housebound)
  • SPECIAL MEETINGS/GROUPS that meet to discuss the importance of Easter and how to honour the important occasion

  • begins on PALM SUNDAY includes MAUNDY THURSDAY and ends on HOLY SATURDAY
  • during Holy Week Catholics REMEMBER Jesus life and his teachings
  • there are special liturgies such as the STATIONS OF THE CROSS as well as re-enactments of the last supper
  • time of REFLECTION and prayer on the SUFFERINGS OF JESUS which saved us from sin

  • allowed us to achieve SALVATION as he died and saved us from sin
  • proves that death has been overcome and assures Christians they will have ETERNAL LIFE
  • gives Christians the opportunity to think about the MYSTERIES of their faith and have a stronger belief
