Q

How do we get the elbow across centre line in closed guard, when the opponent has an extended lead hand (a grip on our lapel, elbow up)?

A

From closed guard we:

  • take a cross cuff grip (if his right hand is gripping us, our right hand takes a 4 finger cuff grip)
  • our second hand goes under his lead hand wrist and grips our own cross-grip hand (like a kimura grip)
  • we put our head flat on the floor

•we perform a strong knee-pull towards our chest with our knees AND we pull with our hands forward and up over our heads, taking everything over head and in one motion we let go of our own wrist, keeping the cross grip we whip his arm in an arcing motion towards his opposite knee
• his shoulder should now be into your chest and he should be side on to you, knee pull in towards his head to keep him trapped
Keeping the cross grip and exerting a pushing force so he can’t pull his arm free
•with your secondary arm reach around his back and take a lat grip
•briefly unlock your legs and shrimp your hips out slightly then re-lock your closed guard
•your now in the side scissor position

WE NEVER PUSH OUR OPPONENTS LEAD GRIPPING HAND TOWARDS THEM, WE ALWAYS PULL IN THE DIRECTION THEIR FINGERS ARE POINTING

Q

How do we achieve the side scissor position, if the opponent has a lead arm grip, but has bent his elbow preventing us getting the lead elbow across the centre line?

A

We attack his rear hand:

  • take a cross grip on his rear hand by going UNDER his lead hand
  • take the heel of your secondary hand and put it on his knuckles on his rear hand
  • pulling with the cross grip and pushing with the heel of your other hand, push across and break his grip
  • your opponent will now resist the pull of your cross grip so with your secondary hand take a tricep seam grip on his rear arm sleeve towards his armpit
  • knee pull and push his arm across your body
  • shift your hips out and lock your legs high up towards his head, this gives greater control in case he tries to posture up
  • get a lat grip with your secondary hand
  • you’re now in side scissor position
