What is a vector?

A

Vector
Magnitude/size.
Directions
Displacement (distance).

Example: If I move a rock 5 m( which is magnitude )is that vector or scalars? That is a scalar quantity because I didn’t give the direction it moved.

Once you determine that the rock move 5 m to the right that is vector quantity.

The vector version of distant is displacement

What is displacement?

A

Displacement is a vector quantity

Displacement indicates how far in and what direction. It is always a straight line..

It is simply a change in position of an object

With displacement you also must address how far and what direction and object moves

Physicist often use square bracket around a symbol for a physical quantity to represent the dimensions of that quantity.

A

For example, if r is the radius of a cylinder and h is the height, then we write [r]= L and [h] = L to indicate the dimension of the radius and height are both of length

Similarly, if we use the symbol A for the surface area of a cylinder and V for its volume, then [A]= L2 and [V]= L3.

If we use the symbol M for mass the cylinder and the P for distant density of a material for which the cylinder is made then [m]= M &[ p] = ML to the -3rd power

A pure number having no unit attach and having a numerical value that is dependent on whether the system or unit may be used.

A

They are represented by straight arrows, ➡️starting at one point on a coordinate access and ending at a different point.

The arrow ➡️represent the direction

The length is called the magnitude
