A

SSD (Solid State Drive) - do not have moving parts,

  • More reliable.

What is a Hybrid Drive

A

Hard drives that combine the technologies of HDD and SSD, having better performance than HDDs while being cheaper than SSDs.

What does Storage Drives do?

A

They read or write information to magnetic storage media. The two basic types are HDD and SSD.

What is a M.2 Drive?

A

Newer type of hard drive that has a smaller form factor which resembles a RAM stick. No connectors are needed. Connects directly to the motherboard.

What is a NVMe?

A

(Non-Volatile Memory Express)- Uses the M.2 form factor and provides reduced latency (lag) and higher input/output.

What is a tape drive?

A

An older storage medium. Has the highest storage capacity. Can hold hundreds of terabytes.
*Usually used for archiving/long term storage

A

A

It is a device that can be successfully connected and disconnected to a computer while it is on and running. (Ex: Mouse, Keyboard, etc)

RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks)- A system that involves multiple hard disks for redundancy and fault tolerance.

!!! What does RAID 0 achieve? !!!

A

RAID 0 (Striping)- Provides the highest performance-{speed} by writing data across multiple drives and requires a minimum of 2 drives operate.

[EX: You are saving a movie. RAID 0 saves half the movie to one half of the drive and half to the other half quickly. If even A SINGLE hard drive is damaged or removed, the entire RAID system will not work]

!!! What does RAID 1 achieve? !!!

A

RAID 1 (Mirroring)- Provides high level of performance and data protection, as it stores a complete copy of the data to a separate hard drive. Requires a minimum of 2 drives to work.

[EX: Gives fault tolerance and redundancy. The more redundant a device is the more protection against data loss. Is more expensive. Fault tolerance meaning, it can handle a fault, an issue, such as removal or damage of a drive]

!!! What does RAID 5 achieve? !!!

A

RAID 5 (Parity + Striping)- Detects data errors using parity bit which stores specific information related to the data. This allows the data that has been affected by errors to be rebuilt from the parity bit information gathered from other drives. Requires a min. of 3 drives to work.

[EX: You can lose a single hard drive, take it completely out of the system and the parity will rebuild information to replace the data lost after reinstalling a new hard drive. Can lose ONLY ONE hard drive or else all data is lost. Kind of like filling in the blanks of a sentence.]

!!! What does RAID 10 achieve? !!!

A

RAID 10 (Mirroring and Striping)- Has 2 sets of 2 hard drives (at least 4 drives). Data within each set is mirrored resulting in the data being redundant. Very popular

[EX: Can lose one hard drive per set but if you lose 2 on one set, it will fail. Has better performance. Have backups to data.]

A
