Rivers Flashcards

1
Q

Solution

A

Minerals are dissolved in the water and carried along in solution (found in any course

2
Q

Suspension

A

Fine light material is carried along in the water (found in the middle or lower as there isn’t enough energy to carry it in the upper course)

Q

Saltation

A

Small pebbles and stones are bounced along the river bed ( mainly found in the middle or upper course as it doesn’t need o be picked up)

Q

Traction

A

Large boulders and rocks are rolled along the river bed (will be mostly dominant in the upper course as the river doesn’t have enough energy to carry it). Hasn’t been dissolved to in the upper course. Not much energy in upper course and large bed load leads to traction.

A

The bed and banks are worn down by the rivers load.

7
Q

Attrition

A

The load carried by the river bump into each other and so are smoothed and broken down into smaller particles as it goes through the courses

Q

Headward erosion (waterfalls)

A

Moves waterfall upstream because erosion wears at the soft rock underneath the hard rock. Then the hard rock is left on an overhang causing it to fall into a plunge pool.

14
Q

Inner bend

A

Where deposition occurs as slow moving water is found there making it shallower. Inner bend found here.

15
Q

Outer bend

A

A lot deeper than inner bend due to erosion. Steep river cliff as erosion erodes the bed and banks. The outer bend is where the fastes flowing water is found. The erosion widens the river.

16
Q

What is an Ox bow lake

A

A horseshoe or semi-circular area that represents the former course of a meander.

17
Q

When are ox bow lakes formed

A

When fast flowing water erodes across to cut of a meander

18
Q

What is needed for the meander to be cut off and form an ox bow lake?

A

When the water is at a high level, the river has enough energy to cut off the meander.

19
Q

What do you need to include when explaining the formation of ox bow lakes ad waterfalls

A

The processes. Such as abrasion, attrition etc

20
Q

What was the Jubilee flood relief channel river and how many houses and businesses did it save and where is it located

A

It intercepts a section of the Thames around towns such as Elton and sLOUGH. It is opened when the Thames is about to overflows around this area; it is an artificial river that can last up to 300 years. It protects 3,000 houses and 500 businesses

21
Q

How much did the Jubilee Flood Relief channel cost

A

330 million pounds
