Courts and Laws used against political opposition

A

–After 1933, the courts were ‘Nazified’ → Nazi state politics above justice

– By 1933, all political parties, other than the Nazi Party had been banned.

–In 1934, Hitler set up the People’s Court to try people for their ‘crimes’ against the state.

–Between 1934 and 1939, 534 people were sentenced to death and were executed for political opposition.

    • In 1939 alone, over 160,000 people were under arrest for political offences.

Communists

A
As many as 150000 Communist Party members were sent to concentration camps while around 30000 were killed as a result of the violent crackdown by the Nazi SS.
Continued to publish anti-Nazi literature→ over time, the Gestapo and SS managed to weed out their underground cells and seized duplication machines, Communist propaganda materials and arrested thousands of KPD members further.
In the late 1930s, German unemployment fell → the mission of the KPD to win over the working class seemed to be even more unattainable.

Red Shock Troopers

A

The Red Shock Troopers→ had as many as 3000 members→ published newsletters calling for a revolution by workers against the Nazi Party→ In December 1933, the leaders of RST was arrested by the Gestapo and imprisoned in a concentration camp.
