Lungs Flashcards
What is the nature of the lungs?
- Lungs reside in the chest. Connects to the throat and opens to the nose.
- Prime minister in charge of regulation
- Internally connected to the large intestine
What is the function of the Lungs?
Function of the lungs:
- Governs Qi
- Diffuses Qi and bodily fluids
- Depurates and downbears/descends
- Governs the waterways
- Controls skin and space between skin and muscles
What are the lung pathologies?
Lung pathologies are:
- Lung Qi Vacuity
- Lung Yin Vacuity
- Lung Dryness
- Wind Cold Fettering the Lung
- Wind Heat Invading the Lung
- Phlegm Dampness Obstructing the Lung
- Phlegm Heat Congesting the Lung
- Retention of Rheum in the Lung
What is the cause/etiology of Lung Qi Vacuity?
- Repeated or chronic impairment of the lungs
- General Qi vacuity can damage lungs
What are the signs and symptoms of lung qi vacuity? How is it treated?
Signs & Symptoms of Lung Qi Vacuity:
- Physical weakness
- Hasty breathing, shortness of breath
- Feeble voice
- Coughing thin phlegm and clear runny nose discharge
- Spontaneous sweating
- Pale complextion
- Tongue - Pale
- Pulse - Weak, empty
Treatment:
- Tonify Lung Qi
What is the cause/etiology of Lung Yin Vacuity?
- Generally from long-term illness that involve damage caused by external or internal pathogenic heat &/or dryness
- Also caused by general qi or yin vacuity
- Similar to qi vacuity but includes signs of heat & dryness
- Kidney Yin often also effected
Signs & Symptoms of Lung Yin Vacuity? How is it treated?
Signs and Symptoms of Lung Yin Vacuity:
- Dry cough with scanty or no phlegm
- Dry throat, mouth, nose
- Hoarse voice
- Yellow urine, constipation
- Tongue - red, very thin coat
- Pulse - fine, rapid
Treatment:
- Enrich yin & moisten lung
What is the cause/etiology of Lung Dryness?
- Traditionally occuring in autumn, but in modern times can be caused by indoor dryness due to heating and cooling systems
- Heat evil can transform fluids and transform into Dryness evil
- The lung desires moisture and dryness damages fluids needed and inhibits lung qi
What are signs & symptoms of lung dryness? How is it treated?
Signs & Symptoms of Lung Dryness:
- dry mouth, nose, throat
- cough
- chest pain
- if in exterior, aversion to cold, slight fever
- Tongue - dry, thin coat
- Pulse - rapid
Treatment:
- Clear lung and moisten dryness
What is the etiology of Wind Cold Fettering the Lung?
- Wind cold settles in the exterior and and Lung can’t depurate or descend
What are the signs & symptoms of Wind Cold Fettering the Lung? What is the treatment?
Signs & Symptoms of Wind Cold Fettering the Lung:
- Aversion to wind without sweating
- Headache and body ache
- Fever
- Nasal congestion/runny nose
- Cough w/ thin white discharge
- Tongue - thin, white coat
- Pulse - floating, tight
Treatment:
- Course & dissipate wind cold
What is the Etiology of Wind Heat Invading the Lungs?
- Wind Heat assails the lungs
- Cold Evil depresses and transforms into Heat
- Heat lingering after Wind path resolved
- Heat steams and scorches body fluids causing the to thicken into yellow phlegm, and may scorch network vessels causing bleeding
- Phlegm heat depresses lung qi
What are the signs & symptoms of Wind Heat Invading the Lungs? What is the treatment?
Signs & Symptoms of Wind Heat Invading the Lungs:
- Fever, bitter taste in mouth, flared nostrils
- Dry throat, thirst
- Yellow or blood streaked phlegm
- Yellow urine, constipation
- Hasty breathing, chest pain, cough
- Long term chronic heat creates abscess: cough w/ pus & blood
- Tongue - Red, yellow coat
- Pulse - Wiry, surging, rapid
Treatment:
- Expel wind, clear heat, diffuse lung
What is the etiology of Phlegm Dampness Obstructing the lung?
- Phlegm damp obstructs Lung Qi causing Qi stagnation and counterflow
- Wind Cold fettering Lung Qi
- Spleen Qi vacuity leads to dampness that accumulates in Lung
- Lung not depurating and descending (for any reason)
What are the signs & symptoms of Phlegm Dampness Obstructing the Lung? What is the treatment?
Signs & Symptoms of Phlegm Dampness Obstructing the Lung:
- Coughing, panting
- Copious clear, thin, white, phlegm
- Dizziness, heavy head, poor concentration
- Chest oppression, pain or palpitations
- Tongue - swollen, greasy, white
- Pulse - Slippery
Treatment:
- Rectify Qi
- Dispel & Transform Phlegm
- Calm panting & stop cough
