Q

What is the cause/etiology of Lung Dryness?

A
  • Traditionally occuring in autumn, but in modern times can be caused by indoor dryness due to heating and cooling systems
  • Heat evil can transform fluids and transform into Dryness evil
  • The lung desires moisture and dryness damages fluids needed and inhibits lung qi

  • Aversion to wind without sweating
  • Headache and body ache
  • Fever
  • Nasal congestion/runny nose
  • Cough w/ thin white discharge

Q

What is the Etiology of Wind Heat Invading the Lungs?

A
  • Wind Heat assails the lungs
  • Cold Evil depresses and transforms into Heat
  • Heat lingering after Wind path resolved
  • Heat steams and scorches body fluids causing the to thicken into yellow phlegm, and may scorch network vessels causing bleeding
  • Phlegm heat depresses lung qi

A

Signs & Symptoms of Wind Heat Invading the Lungs:

  • Fever, bitter taste in mouth, flared nostrils
  • Dry throat, thirst
  • Yellow or blood streaked phlegm
  • Yellow urine, constipation
  • Hasty breathing, chest pain, cough
  • Long term chronic heat creates abscess: cough w/ pus & blood
  • Tongue - Red, yellow coat

Q

What is the etiology of Phlegm Dampness Obstructing the lung?

A
  • Phlegm damp obstructs Lung Qi causing Qi stagnation and counterflow
  • Wind Cold fettering Lung Qi
  • Spleen Qi vacuity leads to dampness that accumulates in Lung
  • Lung not depurating and descending (for any reason)

A

Signs & Symptoms of Phlegm Dampness Obstructing the Lung:

  • Coughing, panting
  • Copious clear, thin, white, phlegm
  • Dizziness, heavy head, poor concentration
  • Chest oppression, pain or palpitations
  • Tongue - swollen, greasy, white
  • Pulse - Slippery

Q

What is the Etiology of Phlegm Heat Congesting the Lung?

A
  • Like phlegm damp pattern, but with heat, tends to be more chronic, long term
  • Phlegm cold damp transforms into heat
  • Wind heat lingers and settles in the lung
  • Spleen Qi vacuity (dampness) and Qi stagnation (heat)
  • Phlegm heat can also obstruct Spleen causing Spleen vacuity
  • Heat can dry fluids leading to yin vacuity
17
Q

What are the signs and symptoms of Phlegm Heat Congesting the Lung? What is the treatment?

A

Signs & Symptoms of Phlegm Heat Congesting the Lung:

  • Barking cough
  • Sticky yellow or green phlegm
  • Shortness of breath, wheezing
  • Chest oppression
  • Sensations of heat
  • Dizziness
  • Tongue - red, swollen, sticky yellow coat
  • Pulse - rapid, slippery

Treatment:

  • Resolve phlegm
  • Clear heat
  • Descend Lung Qi
18
Q

What is the Etiology of Retention of Rheum in the Lung?

A
  • Tends to be an internal, chronic condition, due to failure of any organ of fluid metabolism that leads to damp accumulation in lungs
  • Water damp accumulation in Lungs
  • External invasion of dampness
  • Internal dampness complicated by an external invasion
19
Q

What are the signs & symptoms of Retention of Rheum in the Lungs? What is the treatment?

A

Signs & Symptoms of Retention of Rheum in the Lungs:

  • Copious, foaming phlegm
  • Little or no thirst
  • Cough
  • Worse or inability to lie flat
  • Sensations of cold or sensitivity to cold
  • Body aches
  • Inhibited urination
  • Tongue - white, glossy coat
  • Pulse - Tight, wiry

Treatment:

  • Warm Lung
  • Transform Rheum
