Coaching compared to counselling

A
  • Coaching is distinguished from other forms of training and development by a central focus on action planning to achieve client goals.
  • It is a structured process for personal or professional development.
  • counselling relationship focuses on revisiting past issues (resolving problems or difficulties that may be effecting individual or group functioning)
  • a coaching relationship identifies strategies (based on specific goals) to help an individual or group to achieve its future potential.

A coach assists individuals and groups to

  • articulate the primary goal/s they wish to achieve

A

Participants are working towards their own individual goals in a shared space. For example, a group of individuals may come together over a shared interest in life coaching, career transition, or managing a business.

Action learning groups

A

One form of group coaching in the organisational context is an action learning group, in which leaders from different areas of the organisation come together to work on their own individual projects. In this instance, the group coach facilitates:

a) processes that develop each member’s project skills
b) conversations that allow members to share practical information and peer support with each other, and
c) processes that help the individuals, and the group as a whole, to keep on track.

Differences between group coaching and group facilitation

A
  • facilitator remains process focussed and does not get involved with the content of the group
  • a group coach is expected to be more active in the process and the content, to facilitate the group’s achievement of its stated outcomes
  • group coaches possess additional content expertise on top of design and facilitation expertise

A
  • A check in involves updates on skills practice, or other actions, undertaken since the last session, and explores any related insights or learnings.
  • A check out process involves committing to actions to be undertaken before the next coaching session.
