Eukaryotic Specialisation
What is motility?
The ability of an organism to move independently, using metabolic energy. It is genetically determined.
What is the difference between motility and mobility?
Motility is the ability of an object to move independently, whereas mobility describes the ability of an object to be moved.
How do eukaryotic cells gain motility?
By flexible waving cilia or flagellae
What does the cytoplasm contain?
Contains enzymes for glycolysis and other metabolic reactions, salt, sugars, amino acids, nucleotides and all other things the cell needs to function.
What happens in the cytoplasm?
The first stage of anaerobic respiration (glycolysis). Also fermentation.
What is chromatin?
A mass of material found in the nucleoplasm that contains the genes of the organism. It separates into chromosomes during cell division.
Describe the features of an 80S ribosome:
Found in eukaryotic cells. Around 25nm in diameter.
Describe the features of a 70S ribosome:
Found in prokaryotic cells, mitochondria and chloroplasts. Slightly smaller than 25nm in diameter.
Why are cellulose cell walls so strong?
They are made of microfibrils of cellulose (a polysachharide), embedded within a matrix.
Cellulose cell walls have incredible strength and so contribute to the overall strength of the cell wall.
