5 Rules

A
  1. when repeated, add them together.
    ex: III = I+I+I→3
  2. when a SMALLER roman # is written to the RIGHT of a larger #, ADD
    ex: VI= V + I → 6
  3. when a SMALLER roman # is written to the LEFT of a larger #, SUBTRACT
    ex: IX = X - I → 9
  4. Do not use more than 3 of the same Roman # in a sequence.
    ex: IIII= 4 [wrong] , IV → 4
  5. when rule 2 + 3 are in conflict, use rule 3
    ex: XIX= 21 [wrong] , XIX= 19
