Q

Elaborate on, ‘Self-reflection to better define the individuals’ reasons to remain motivated’

A

an athlete can reflect on their ‘why’ or purpose

  • i ask an athlete why do they want to achieve X? What would that mean to them?
  • we want to make sure that their purpose is not solely defined by external motivators (ex: money, fame, appreciation by others), but primarily internally motivated
  • envisioning a clear pic of one’s why, & what it would mean to reach that why, can set individuals up for success

Q

A motivation exercise:

A

have athletes bring in a pic of themselves as a young athlete

  • we consider what that little kid would think of the athlete they currently are
  • this can help re-ignite a love of a game, & help athletes realize just how far they have come

Reminders:

A

are great ways to include motivators in one’s environment

  • using their phone lock screen as a quote found motivating to them
  • placing stickies around one’s room, or in an athletes’ locker can serve as a prompt to initiate behaviour

Q

Consequences of motivation

A
  • we don’t want coaches to be the only motivational consequence, as athletes go through diff coaches & should be able to motivate their own behaviour
  • only relying on external rewards (ex: ribbons or trophies) can really lead to a lack of confidence when an athlete is in a slump or performing poorly
