A

precontemplation - increase awareness of the importance of exercise and emphasize the benefits, provide general education one on one or through print or through electronic publications, discuss health risks, discuss myths and fears related to exercise
contemplation - make a list of adv related to regular exercise, continue with education and discussion of benefits, provide clear and specific recs for an exercise program, identify social support system (family, friends etc), build the client’s self confidence
preparation - evaluate support system and barriers, provide personalized exercise design, work on goal setting and action plan
action - talk to the client about self-monitoring, talk to the client about self-reinforcement, enhance the client’s self-efficacy, provide encouragement, prepare for relapses, help the client prevent relapses
maintenance - review and revise goals and exercise program, address concerns that may lead to relapses and strategize how to avoid the, set new fitness goals - what is next?, provide social support, introduce clients to others in the same phase

feeler - makes decisions based on values and feelings. Warm and friendly, is in touch with how feels and values harmony and compassion. Is quick to compliment others, is motivated by appreciation and avoids arguments and conflicts. She may schedule appointments on various days at various times.

A

judgers - tends to take workouts seriously, is prompt, enjoys having a defined start and finish and sees the need for rules and structure. Likes to make and stick with plans and has a work first, play later attitude. Has set training schedule each week and will not change appointment times.
perceivers - is playful and casual, likes to have opinions, and has a play first, work later attitude. Likes to start new things and appreciates the freedom to be spontaneous.

What are tips for working the personality types?

A

Introvert - use subtle cueing and low volume, make sure the client feels comfortable in the facility, ask questions to make sure the client understands your instructions and address any concerns, provide home workouts
Extrovert - use circuit training for variety, sty on track and minimize side conversations, celebrate success and provide validation, recommend group fitness
sensor - explain each exercise step by step, focus and pay attention, align program with activities the client has enjoyed in the past
Intuitive - link interim to long-term goals, explore variety within interval training, allow time for careful technique instruction and to preview upcoming additions in the program
Thinker - give honest, direct feedback, commend the client for making improvements, consider providing articles or additional topics for discussion
Feeler -take cues from client, compliment the client, be easygoing and flexible, show gratitude for the client’s efforts and reinforce their goals
Judger - schedule training in advance, be on time and fully prepared, share your plan at beginning of session and follow as closely as possible
Perceiver - help the client stay focused and see things through, keep workouts fresh and varied (options), surprise client with recognition, fun activities and challenges
