Q

A customer reports the following situation:

We have identified a number (123-456-7890) that we get failures when we fax with GFI, but we can fax to it from a fax machine with no issue. When we call the number, we hear a pulse, not a tone like you would expect. I am assuming this is part of the problem. Could it be that we need to increase the time that FaxMaker or the Brooktrout waits? Other numbers work as expected.
Which of the following options offers a viable solution to the issue?

Extend the CED_timeout value in the file btcall.cfg from its default of 4000 to 8000.

Customer:

After a Windows Server update, the Brookout Services do not start anymore. The Windows event log says “no operational channels, unable to start”. This means that GFI FaxMaker will no longer start either.

L1 Agent (public note):

Dear Customer, please take the following steps:

In a Command window (cmd), navigate to where bostsrv.exe is located. (The default path is C:\Program Files (x86)\GFI\FaxMaker\brooktrout\TR1034\Boston\Bin)
Type bostsrv -remove
Press Enter. The program will report that the service is removed.
Open the Dialogic Brooktrout configuration tool.
Review the settings and click the Apply button.
The boston service should now start without problems.

Customer:

I have carried out your instructions.

Unfortunately, the brooktrout service does not start and reports the following error message:

L1 Agent (internal note):

I had a remote session with the customer:

fax device dialogic diva bri-2
Unable to start boston service - Code 31 error
The issue started when they installed the windows updates of their server
Reinstalled brooktrout drivers - same issue
Checked the driver version of dialogic diva, 8.3
Downloaded the latest version 8.5.10 - http://www.dialogic.com/download/p/w2k/divafor/3/dsr_8_5_10/amd64/111-537/download.htm
We’re having the same issue even after updating the drivers
I found out that the customer is using ISDN/CAPI

Q

Customer:

Lines 2 and 3 fail to initialize after installation and migration. Trial keys were installed during testing but when the valid keys were implemented I am only able to get the first 2 lines to initialize. Both the Brooktrout and Faxmaker license keys have 4 channels/lines listed. I rehosted the Brooktrout license without issue but I can only get 2 lines to initialize within GFI Faxmaker. This issue occurred before and it was recommended I check the number of channels listed in the callctrl file. I did so and found 4 channels listed. The Faxmaker license also has 4 lines listed as I stated above.
L1 Agent (public note):

Dear customer, please check the line settings for line 2 & 3 and see if they are configured properly as per the line 1 or 4.
Goto GFI FaxMaker Configuration > Lines / Devices > Properties > Select Line 2 > Properties:
- Please ensure that Card type under Device tab is selected as Brooktrout SR140 and line capabilities and line options are selected as per the Line 1 or 4 settings.
Customer:

When implementing the new environment and adding the new lines, I copied Line 0 for the creation of lines 1, 2 and 3. The configuration of all 4 lines are the same and the Card type for all 4 is set to Brooktrout SR140. There are 4 lines, 0, 1, 2 and 3 with the last 2 lines failing to initialize, 2 and 3 (see attachment: lines-2-3-failed-initialize.png).

Identify the next valid steps for troubleshooting the issue:

Verify the key is correct in the Brooktrout License Manager

Ensure the Boston Host service’s start mode is set to Manual

Check if the Brooktrout drivers have been correctly updated

Check the settings integrity in the Brooktrout Configuration
