Sampling techniques Flashcards

1
Q

Explain and demonstrate how to handle the Ruttner? Are there any drawbacks or advantages with the equipment?

A

The ruttner is a water sampler.

Could be cross contamination. Can’t be used in flowing water

Q

Explain and demonstrate how to handle the Ekman grabber? Are there any drawbacks or advantages with the equipment?

A

You open up the metal edges and fasten them so when you put the grabber in the water and drop a weight on it it will close and get the sediment sample. Negative that you don’t get the layers of the sediments.

Q

Explain and demonstrate how to handle the corer? Are there any drawbacks or advantages with the equipment?

A

You drop a pipe into the sediments to get the sample. Doesn’t work with all types of sediment, for example very soft sediment. Perks that you get to see layers of the sediments

Q

Explain and demonstrate how to handle the peristaltic pump? Are there any drawbacks or advantages with the equipment?

A

Peristaltic pump gives groundwater samples. 7 meter depth limit due to it depending on gravity. Has the advantage of being able to change tube after every sample – there will be no cross contamination (the pump itself is up at ground level). No exposure to oxygen. It’s not suitable for volatile substances.

Q

Explain and demonstrate how to handle the bailer? Are there any drawbacks or advantages with the equipment?

A

Bailer is dropped down in groundwater hole and a weight is dropped to close the bailer. Problem with oxygen coming into the sample. Cheap so it could be used and discarded.

Q

Explain and demonstrate how to handle the riffle splitter? Are there any drawbacks or advantages with the equipment?

A

Divides your sample into to halves. A good way to decrease the sample size.

Q

Explain and demonstrate how to handle the pH meter calibration and measurements? Are there any drawbacks or advantages with the equipment?

A

You have to calibrate the pH-meter with two fluids that have a known pH (7 & 4) and then pH is measured in sample until there’s a stable value.
